Van Persie Could leave United
07:10Manchester United are planning for life without Robin van Persie and look certain to part company with the Dutch striker in the summer with a year remaining on his current contract.
The 31-year-old former Arsenal star stands to land an additional £10 million in loyalty bonuses if he sees out his four-year contract at Old Trafford.
But indifferent form and concerns over his fitness have led United to embark on a search for his successor with Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani and Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller both on the radar, according to the Evening Standard.
Ironically as Van Persie prepares to face his former club Arsenal at the Emirates tomorrow night, the talismanic marksman, who has been the Premier League's leading goal-scorer at both clubs, is openly facing a severe crisis of confidence.
Last week he admitted his form wasn't good enough.
“Three goals in nine games is not enough. Against Chelsea I had a nice chance and I had three options: chip it, go round the keeper or just straight at the goal. I chose the last and safest. If I wouldn't have thought it over I would just chip it. I just have to trust again in my intuition.”
Of the 35 players who have scored three or more goals in the Premier League this season, Van Persie has the worst shot conversion rate of any of them – a miserable 13.6 per cent according to Opta.
A closer look at Van Persie's statistics over the last three seasons tell their own story. Compared to this stage in previous seasons Van Persie has had more shots on goals but converted far fewer chances. It is also notable that Van Persie has failed to make one single assist this season.
Many inside United, including former chief executive David Gill, questioned whether a £64million investment in Van Persie which included £24m transfer fee plus his wages for four years - was prudent.
But Sir Alex Ferguson, who went to unprecedented lengths to push through the deal was vindicated when United regained the Premier League title from arch rivals City, with a prolific Van Persie leading the charge.
Last season, and following the arrival of David Moyes, stories started to emerge that the Dutchman was extremely unhappy.
Although he moved swiftly to deny there was a rift and happy to remain at Old Trafford his form, nonetheless, was on the decline.
Following Moyes departure and the arrival of Van Gaal it was anticipated his close working relationship with the former Dutch national boss would signal a return to form.
But it hasn't materialised and Van Gaal allows no room for sentiment when it comes to success.
The arrival of Radamel Falcao from Monaco on-loan was clearly a message of intent from Louis van Gaal but there are ongoing doubts whether United will make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign.
The 28-year-old Colombian is yet to complete a full game since joining in September and will be absent when United face Arsenal tomorrow as he battles to overcome an ongoing calf problem
It is unlikely United will recoup much of the £24 million they paid Arsenal for Van Persie but as they plan for the future they are prepared to write it off rather than invest further in a player whose best form looks to be behind him.
Robin van Persie says he is not ready to settle for life on the bench after hinting he may consider leaving Manchester United to look for first-team football.
Van Persie, 31, will soon enter the last year of his contract at Old Trafford with his future in doubt after manager Louis van Gaal refused to confirm his fellow Dutchman will be at United again next season.
The striker started just one of United's last 13 games after suffering an ankle injury at Swansea in February and losing his place as the first-choice forward to captain Wayne Rooney.
And with United -- who have tied up a £25 million move for PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay -- expected to try and recruit another forward, Van Persie says he wants to be more than just a squad player in what he admits is a "a strange, difficult situation."
"I still have ambitions of playing every week," the former Arsenal captain told reporters in the Netherlands.
Manager Van Gaal held a series of meetings with some players in the final week of the season to let them know where they stand in his plans.
But while there are suggestions United may look to sell Van Persie, the Netherlands international says both parties have a decision to make.
"I'm going to [stay] calm and relaxed, sit down and consider everything," he continued. "The club must do its homework and so must I."
Van Persie scored 10 goals in his least productive campaign since an injury-hit 2007-08 season, but the forward -- who has often spoken of his desire to play on into his late 30s -- rejected suggestions he is in decline.
"I feel top fit and I think I can still go on for several years," he said. "Take note of my words."
Van Persie accepts that the failings of United's forwards were a reason why they did not challenge for the title.
Rooney mustered just 12 league goals and Radamel Falcao a mere four during his loan spell from Monaco and Van Persie, who won the Premier League's Golden Boot in successive seasons between 2011 and 2013, says their return was nowhere enough.
"It's not good that a top club like Manchester United does not have a scorer with 20 or more goals behind his name each season and that is why we only finished fourth," he said.
United produced some of their best performances of the season, including the wins over Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City, when Van Persie was sidelined.
And while he had a close relationship with Van Gaal when they were captain and manager of the Netherlands team that finished third in the 2014 World Cup, Van Persie said he understood his bit-part role when he was fit again.
"After I came back from injury I realised that I would not automatically get back in the starting XI," he added. "But I didn't have a problem with that because they were playing well at the time.
"These things happen. We are living in an adult world. Louis van Gaal is not the coach of Robin van Persie but of Manchester United with 25 in the squad."
